| People have had some very interesting ideas about the woods in this poem:
--- these deep woods is his and he must care for what ever are in the forest all around him if its the animals that live in the woods or the trees or the birds that are flying around him that he should be thankful for all the beautiful gifts that are around him, that he should not take it for granted for what is given to him and to thank for everything that he has if its rich or poor --- Listener --- He went to the woods where could think about what he wanted do in his life before his came to a halt. He is in God's place that God created so he can figure out what he is going to do next. --- Edna ---The woods symbolize itself in the snow how cold and windy it is and there is a house that is very close to the lake.---Jillian ---The woods symbolize peace and quiet and nature and the fresh air you breathe---Feyad ---The person who owns the wood lives in the village. A farmer is telling the story, "My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near." Woods are quiet and lovely this time of year.---Monique ---Yes I think I can find symbolism in this poem. I think the animals own the woods. The woods symbolize nature.---Leon ---This poem is about a farmer who owns the woods. It's snowing. It is cold. He is riding a horse. The horse has bells that are ringing. This poem might be about Santa Claus because there is snow on the ground. The horse could be a reindeer ringing the bells. He will get no sleep, "And miles to go before l sleep." He will stop at the farmhouse. Maybe there are kids there.---Bill ---I think He walking in the woods. On a very bad storming day and He hears the wind Blowing hard. And He can;t find his way back home. it starts to get very dark now And He is Looking for a farmhouse to Keep warm. And He hears harness bell on a horse. ---Ida ---I think it is God who owns the wood, which means no man owns the woods, they belong to all of us. I think this because we call a church God's house and the church is probably in the village. What do the woods symbolize? I think the woods symbolize everything in the world that is wild and untamed and not controlled by humans.---Cassie ---When I first read the poem I did not see any symbolism. I pictured myself stopping to rest on my way home during a storm. After I read the rest of the questions I looked for symbolism and metaphors. "The darkest evening of the year" could be the worst time of his life. I think the poet owns the woods and he was running away from his problems. The woods symbolize the poet's life.---Chris ---I think this story is about a man who got lost on the way home one night. He had wandered onto someone else’s property and his mind began to wander. He put thoughts into what kind of person had owned the land. As he thought of the time, and how dark it was getting, he felt that no one would come out this way that night. Fear overcomes him and he felt very alone. As he began to make camp and bug down for the night, he asks himself if he was not making some kind of mistake. As he takes off the blanket from the horse the bells on the harness ring and “Snap him into a since of awareness of his situation", of being in an empty isolated place.---Lawrence ---I think he was walking in the woods on a bad stormy day.He hears the wind blow hard. And he can't find his way back home.its starts to get very dark now.---Ida ---I think time owns the woods the woods represents one life and experience. a time of repose. he could be using a metaphor. The entire poem can be the writers experience or he is writing metaphorical---Sylma ---we think that the woods are a life journey the author is the owner of the woods.---Carol These are all good ideas about the woods. Which idea do you agree with? Or do you have another idea? |
