Week 1People talk about their experience with the internetSometimes you have to try lots of key words to find where you want to go. My favorite web site is the one where you can find lost relatives, I think it is cool that you can find out their email addresses. I learnt how to go to different web sites like www.yahoo.ca and www.google.ca and you can find the same information on both, it might just be arranged differently. I think a computer is the greatest invention ever made because it is so much easier to find info. on this then going to the library, and it is great to be able to do your homework on the computer. Some other sites have to many titles to go by, so I really don't like it that much. My favourite sight on the web is google. I find it has a lot to offer when u are trying to find something on the web. What I didn't like about the internet is that there is so many things linking to one word. Also there is one advantage, you can find almost anything you want on the internet. One disadvantage is that you need the proper search word, if you do not then you will end up with something you didn't want. My favorite kind of websites are the ones I can explore for any of my own interests. The only thing I won’t like about the internet is when my children get older I will be constantly worried. It’s very useful for research and for communicating with people all over the world. I also like to play games and my favourite web site is coffeebreak.com. Except for those irritating pop up ads and inappropriate chat rooms I enjoy the Internet. Dealing with the need for information and recipes to deal with Type 2 diabetes really gave me an appreciation for the information available. Yes, using "exactly" the right word during a search is important. Some of my search results have been hilarious! Trying to learn about Blue Jays (the bird) and ending up repeatedly with Blue Jays as in baseball team! Sometimes I have ended up in sites that are past inappropriate. Just color my face fire engine red! There is nothing really that I don't like about the internet. It is all new to me. I haven't even done research on the internet before but it's defiantly interested me and I am a quick learner. My only experience on-line as been with the poetry course. So far that was my favorite website. It would be a pretty proud feeling to open up your own website. If I was to open up my own web site I would open one for young moms who are single or struggling and who needs a little time to chat with others in the same position. When I came to school, I did not know a lot about computer. Since taking the computer course I began to understand computer. I find the internet very helpful in finding parts and other information on different topic. My web site that I like is StreetRod.Com. My favorite web site is one that I write the news on. Its a gaming web site you can visit it here www.thedawgpound.net You see the first news post is from Holigan13 That is me. You can browse the forums but some of the language there may be offensive to some so beware. I work for a magazine called Literacies that is for literacy workers. You can see our website at www.literacyjournal.ca. I made this website with the help of someone I met in a class I took about how to make a website. What do you think of our website? I also belong to a group of literacy workers who like to talk about how to make literacy programs better. We put out a newsletter. I made a website for our group ALL BY MYSELF. You can see it at www.literacyenquirer.ca/. You can see a picture of my sister protesting with her famous pig sign if you click on "the current issue" link. I love this website: www.flipflopflyin.com/minipops/index.html. I can spend hours there clicking on all the links and reading the stories. My favourite is Pete and Bob #6 - go to http://www.flipflopflyin.com/shakse/index.html and look down the right side for the link. |

Week 3People talk about bias and influence in the mediaWell, it has been a very interesting week. The messages about "Whose experience counts?" showed us that there are many ways bias can be expressed. People seemed to agree "that everyone in the world will always have bias towards one thing or another." We heard some advice about keeping our minds open and not being conned. We heard about how one-sided arguments can be biased. We heard about how the use of language can show bias. We heard about how what is left out of a story can show bias. I agree that it is a mistake to think that we can be objective and that we have to be careful to watch for when bias becomes discrimination or closes us to hearing other valid arguments and points of view. I think that, like these amazing Alpharoute students, we all have to use our critical thinking and media literacy skills to spot bias. ---------------------- Hi! Everyone: I think that whoever reads a article on the internet of a email should read it with a open mind and remember that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You should take nothing that you have read or seen and take it seriously, because unless they actually name you in the article then they could be talking about a million different people. Bye for now Bonnie Hi There ! If you read article from the internet and the email .You should keep your mind open when you read email and the internet. People will write about something that is not true. You should be experience with the computer so you do not get mix up in different topic. They can con you in to something that you do not want to get into. My experience is I do not let people con me into something that I do not know about. See you soon! Barry I have been conducting some research in regards to bias on the Internet. The web site I chose was “ Did the holocaust really happen?” I’ve found a lot of bias in this web site even though I agree with his views. In my research, the author tries to show how holocaust deniers are misleading people by saying that the holocaust survivors are not truthful about what happened. I feel that the author gives a convincing argument in saying that these holocaust deniers are fascist, communist, and socialists with personal agendas and racist motivations. Nevertheless, he is being biased because his views are too opinionated and not fully justified or supported. This site is trying to protect what the Jews went through during the holocaust; however, without complete references to his sources, his site appears to be biased or unjustified. I have concluded that everyone in the world will always have bias towards one thing or another. I have been reading a story about an Olympic comeback and I feel that it is biased because of what they’re writing. They are using words that make the article have a positive spin such as “golden boy”, “bad decisions”, and “wrong side”. Instead of getting Michael to talk about what’s important, they get him to talk about his training, when he should be talking about his drinking and driving. Thus, they are making light of a bad situation. I think that they should be writing about the important stuff, instead of writing around it. Natasha I have been recently conducting a research on the Internet about web sites that are either bias or discriminatory. I found a web site on George W. Bush that I found to be biased in that the writer makes big statements about the President entire career. For instance, he made a statement about how Bush’s entire presidency was a “war scandal and nonsense and failure”. The author also expresses his opinion on gay marriage; he does not feel it is necessary for the government to decide whom a citizen can marry, whether it be a man or woman. Even though I believe in what he is saying, I feel that he was very one-sided and that he should be more open minded. Ashley April 14, 2005 I have just read the a story on the Toronto Sun about the 6 week old baby girl who was abducted by her mother from CAS. I found this site biased because the article didn't write why the mother abducted her daughter. So by not writing about why the mother abducted her baby, this makes the mother look like a criminal. Thus you shouldn't belive everything you read. |
