Tips for finding work…

  • I find work by going into the place and applying for the position
  • I would look in the newspaper, sometimes look on the internet, walk around and handing out application, talking to people who is already in jobs, and also go to job orientation.
  • Looking on the internet.
  • In the past I post my resume on monster. com and use the wanted ads and agencies. http://seekeremployer.monster.com/
  • I went through an agency to find a job, and they help me find one
  • I use the HRSDC job bank to look for work. You can find it by typing "Canada Job Bank" into google.
  • My tips for looking for work are telephone calls to employers plus faxing resumes

Many agree that knowing someone is very important…

  • I find my previous jobs through a friend of the family and through my mother.
  • The way I got my previous job is through a headhunter. He sent me to the manufacturing warehouse where I was interviewed and then given a job.
  • My best tip in working with the school board is that you have to know someone that taught you in the past. I heard about job hiring at Canada's wonderland in the mail with my season pass the year of 1999.
  • I would like to know how people get jobs because I have only ever found a job because I knew someone who worked where they were looking to hire someone.
  • I feel in order to get a good job, in the "Fortune 500 Companies" you have to know someone that works within the organization.

Many face challenges and frustration…

  • Seven years handing out resumes, filling out applications and it was not getting me nowhere. So I went back to school to upgrade my Education.
  • I look for jobs all the time. I find one and stay for a couple of months. I get tired of the same thing over and over. The jobs that come along are for a small wage.
  • Unfortunately, I live in the country and I don't have transportation but I am soon going to be volunteering as a receptionist in an organization. This really helps me get experience and it gets my foot in the door. If you live in the country, you can always hook a ride with a neighbour going into the city. Just an idea. Our OW Steering Committee is hoping to hook up a phone system where we can access local people for drives and childcare.

And quite a few people are skeptical about using the internet to find work…

  • Does looking on the internet really work? My husband has a good job that he got partly because his old boss is married to his new boss. He is a really good worker. He applied to a lot of jobs on the internet, but only got a few interviews.
  • My oldest daughter, has just finished, her second year at the Uni. of Toronto Law School. She has never been able to find a decent job through the internet, although she has gone to many interviews and sent out many resumes for over 6 years. The only good job she has found is at her mother's place of employment, My wife works for a very large multinational corporation.
  • I have found some resort and camp jobs on cooljobscanada.com but I haven't had much luck, except for 1 e-mail back, but that’s it.
